Q. Who are the researchers?
A. The BRAVE Study at UCLA School of Public Health is a group of researchers and community members committed to uplifting immigrant voices, building communities, and informing health policy interventions through research. We are working alongside our partner organizations: Boat People SOS – Houston in Houston, TX, Womankind in New York City, NY, and Community Resource Corporation (CRC) in Atlanta, GA.
Q. What is the purpose of the survey?
A. The current survey aims to better understand Asian immigrant women’s health and its association with their immigration history. Particularly, we explore how social, political, and economic experiences related to immigration status affect health care use for women’s health issues.
Q. Why is my participation important?
A. Your responses contribute to the accurate and trustworthy data regarding the health and perspectives of Asian immigrant women. This data helps policymakers, local authorities, and organizations to understand and evaluate the resources and needs of Asian immigrant women and communities nationwide. Your participation is essential for making this possible.
Q. How can I take the survey?
A. You will need to take an eligibility screener to see if you are eligible for our survey. If you are eligible, a link to the survey will be sent to your phone number and email. You MUST use this link to complete your survey.
If you were recruited at a recruitment venue, you can access the eligibility screener from the QR code or link on the flyer. If you were recruited by someone you know who took the survey, you MUST take the eligibility screener from the link they or the BRAVE Study team sent you.
Participants can either take the survey online at their own convenience, take the survey over the phone with one of our researchers, or visit one of our local offices in Los Angeles, Houston, Atlanta, or New York City to take the survey. You will be able to choose which option you prefer in the eligibility screener if you are eligible.
Q. Do I have to live in Los Angeles County, Greater Houston, New York City, or Greater Atlantato participate in the survey?
A. No, you do not have to live in one of these areas to participate. However, our physical offices and local partner organizations are only located in these areas.
Q. Do I have to finish the survey all at once?
A. No, you can start the survey and come back to it later. However, please keep in mind that the survey link will expire after 21 days.
Q. Will I be paid for survey participation?
A. Yes. Upon completing this survey, you will receive a $40 Amazon or Target gift card code. Additionally, if you refer your friends who are Asian immigrant women to participate, you will receive an extra $10 gift card code for each friend who completes the survey.
Q. What kind of personal information are you collecting?
A. We DO NOT collect your name or your family members’ name. Your responses will be completely de-identified. Our survey questionnaire asks your demographic characteristics (i.e., age, sex, race/ethnicity, immigration status, marital status, etc.), immigration history, health care experience (i.e., health insurance, health care use, health status, etc.), and so on. To send gift card codes to you after the survey completion, we collect your contact information. This can be either phone numbers or email addresses.
Q. How is my contact information protected? How do I know my information is safe?
A. Your contact information will be stored separately in our secure system and will be destroyed upon completion of the study.
Q. I lost my survey link! What should I do?
A. A. If you cannot find the link sent to your phone number or email, please call the BRAVE Study Team at (323) 963-4711 or email us at thebravestudy@g.ucla.edu. We will confirm that you took our eligibility screener and are eligible, then send you a new link to take the survey.
Q. When and how do I receive the gift cards?
A. We will send a $40 gift card code within 3-5 business days after you complete the online survey. If you referred someone, we will send a $10 gift card code within 3-5 business days after your referral completes the survey. The gift card code will be sent via the contact information you provided to us.
Q. I have completed the survey and want to refer someone I know to take the survey. How can I do this?
A. There is a question in the survey that asks if you would like to refer anyone. If you chose ‘yes,’ then we will send you 3 links to share with your referrals. These links are links for our eligibility screener that are unique to you / your referrals. If they are eligible, they will get a link to the survey.
If you received a referral card from a member of our team at a recruitment venue, you can choose to give these cards to your referrals OR share the links we send.
Q. Who do I contact if I have additional questions, recommendations, or issues?
A. You can talk to the researchers about any questions, concerns, or complaints you have regarding this study. Contact the study researchers at (323) 963-4711. You can also email the research team at thebravestudy@g.ucla.edu.
If you have questions about your rights as a research participant, or you have concerns or suggestions and you want to talk to someone other than the researchers, you may contact the UCLA Office of the Human Research Protection Program (OHRPP) at (310) 206-2040; by email: participants@research.ucla.edu or by mail: Box 951406, Los Angeles, CA 90095-1406.
